View DetailsColombia is currently undergoing one of the most ambitious transportation infrastructure transformations in South America. Driven by the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI - Agencia Nacional de Infraestructura) and the National Road Institute (INVIAS), the country is rolling out extensive Fourth-Generation (4G) and Fifth-Generation (5G) road concession projects. These initiatives aim to construct thousands of kilometers of dual carriageways, tunnels, and viaducts to connect major economic hubs like Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, and the Caribbean ports of Barranquilla and Cartagena.
With thousands of kilometers of new roads being laid and existing highways being upgraded, road maintenance has become a critical priority. A key aspect of this maintenance is road marking and, consequently, road marking paint removal. Over time, road markings fade, traffic patterns change, and lanes require re-alignment. In Colombia, the unique geographical and meteorological conditions—ranging from high-altitude rain and fog in the Andean region to extreme heat and humidity along the coasts—accelerate the wear and tear of thermoplastic and cold-paint markings. Consequently, contractors require reliable, high-performance road marking paint removal equipment to clear old markings without damaging the underlying asphalt or concrete.
As Colombia aligns its transport regulations with international standards, the Ministry of Transport demands high-retroreflectivity road markings. Replacing old, non-compliant markings requires rapid, clean, and non-destructive removal technologies, minimizing road closure times on busy corridors like the Autopista Norte in Bogotá.
Traditionally, road marking removal in Colombia relied on grinding or chemical stripping. However, these methods present significant drawbacks. Grinding often scars the road surface, creating grooves that gather water and lead to premature asphalt degradation, especially under heavy Andean rain. Chemical strippers pose severe environmental hazards, contaminating local water runoff and violating Colombia's increasingly strict environmental laws enforced by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (Ministerio de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sostenible).
To address these challenges, the Colombian road construction industry is shifting toward two major trends:
Bogotá, situated at 2,640 meters above sea level, experiences frequent temperature fluctuations and high UV exposure, causing thermoplastic paint to cure to an extremely hard state. When re-routing lanes for the TransMilenio bus rapid transit system, municipal contractors require heavy-duty paint removal machines that can operate efficiently in thin air without losing engine power. Our high-pressure road sweepers and specialized removal units are engineered to maintain peak performance under these high-altitude conditions.
The mountainous terrain of Antioquia, characterized by steep inclines, sharp curves, and heavy cargo transit, requires highly visible, durable road markings. When lane configurations are updated to improve safety on routes like the Autopista Medellín-Bogotá, old lines must be removed completely. Leftover ghost markings can confuse drivers, especially during dense night fog. Precision removal is vital here to ensure clear guidance and prevent accidents.
In coastal regions, salty air and high humidity interact with road marking materials, sometimes causing them to bubble or peel. Preparing these surfaces for re-application requires thorough cleaning and paint removal. Our dual-use cold-spray and sweeping equipment ensures that the coastal road surfaces are perfectly prepped, maximizing the lifespan of the new markings.
